ZIPPO Lighters

We had these for sale some time ago.     .... Art by Tim
They were prized by smokers, but they make better SOUVENIR's
and you can still light the camp fire with them.

Put me down for two lighters. I haven't smoked since 1975 when my first daughter was born. I didn't want to be the one who burned her with a lit cigarette.
I own an original Kawishiwi Lighter that I bought around 1971-72 but I'll be dammed if I can find it. It is either at the bottom of my sea bag or in a cardboard box in the attic somewhere. I brought that sea bag home in august of 1973 and I haven't opened it since. It's been up in my attic for 25 years, untouched...
Well be that as is may, I have wanted to find that thing forever, and if I can buy a replacement or two I'm all for it. I don't smoke, but hell I might want to start a forest fire or something some time... Hey, just kidding. If you get close to the 50 mark, and are down a couple, let me know. Maybe I could go a few more.

I have a Zippo Kawishiwi lighter from when I was aboard her 1960-1953.  I am going to try to photograph it and scan it in so I can send it to you to view.  It has the colors pretty well worn off, but it is still a treasure of mine from the great days aboard our ship.                                                                                                   Mike Heaviland
It just so happens that I was visiting one of my younger brothers in Colorado and he and his wife had just recently moved.  Anyways, he said "Dan, have I told you what I have kept all these years that you had sent me over 25 years ago?"  I replied, "I can't remember my own birthday and you want me to remember what I sent you over 25 years ago"!  And he pulls out this box and carefully unwraps this package and hands it to me.  It was an original USS Kawishiwi lighter that I had sent him.  Its never been used.  I was amazed that he had it.  It has the ship with the name on one side and the other has the ships plaque.  I stood there transfixed on that small object for the longest time.  I have collected lots of ships lighters during my time but I didn't have a Kawishiwi lighter.  So with all that said, I would like to place my order for one of the Kawishiwi lighters.                                        Dan Hilbert
Even after we stopped carrying AVGAS around 1976, we still had a strict "No Smoking On The Weather Decks" policy in force 24/7.  The one exception to this was our ship commander who was the model for the definition of "chain smoker".  While he was able to abstain for the brief periods of transit of the main and tank decks, he always had one lit while on the bridge, even while unrep was happening.
No one knew exactly how much he smoked, best guesses were in the 4-pack-a-day range.  In any event, the Captain completely wore out the thumb wheel on a Kawishiwi lighter in a six month deployment.  I always thought that Zippos were indestructible, but the thumb wheel was worn so smooth that it would no longer strike the flint.  Who knew?                                                                                                                 Best wishes, Lary Harris

I look at my old lighter every so often (pretty well worn out) and wished I had gotten an extra when I got out.  Put me down for 2.  You must be a mind reader!                                                                                   Jim  Thoel

Randy Greenlee's lighters. He quit smoking when he was 35 but still keeps them around.
