BB 61 Iowa and BB 64 Wisconsin at
Philadelphia
Navy Yard, Pennsylvania (Mar 29, 1992) If you can tell them apart, you
were either working there at the time, or you have better eyes than I
have.
Note the "splice" down the middle of the image, such that the
battleship
moored at the pier was imaged in two different passes. Note also the
empty
(and wet) drydock at the left. This was one of two drydocks at the
Philadelphia
Navy Yard capable of handling large aircraft carriers; the loss of
these
drydocks was a key point of controversy in the closing of the yard in
1995.
CV 43 Coral Sea at Philadelphia
Navy
Yard, Pennsylvania
(Mar 29, 1992) One of three Midway class large fleet carriers completed
shortly after World War II, Coral Sea was finally decommissioned and
stricken
April 30, 1991. She resided at the Philadelphia Navy Yard until July
1993,
when she was towed to Baltimore for scrapping, a process which dragged
out over more than seven years.
