USS KAWISHIWI (AO-146) HISTORY
AND MISSION
The USS KAWISHIWI (AO-146) was designed primarily for rapid transfer of
petroleum products to forces afloat while operating at high speeds and
long distances from base. The KAWISHIWI carries, in addition to her own
bunker oil, nearly 7.5 millions gallons of fuel oil, jet fuel, and
aviation gasoline for delivery to the fleet.
Like all Navy oilers, KAWISHIWI is named after the
river of that name which is located in the North Eastern portion of the
state of Minnesota. The indian word, KAWISHIWI means "River Full of
Beaver Houses".
KAWISHIWI was built by the New York Ship Building
Company of Camden, New Jersey. She is 656 feet long and has a beam of
86 feet and was commissioned in the U.S. Navy on 6 July, 1955
As a unit of the Service Force, U.S. Pacific Fleet
KAWISHIWI is periodically deployed to the Western Pacific in support of
the Seventh Fleet. KAWISHIWI'S home port is Pearl Harbor, Hawaii

NOTES
1.
Both NSFO AND JP-5 can be
provided at station 8 by a double hose rig. Use of this rig restricts
its length to 230 feet. Single rig normally flown during winter months.
Approximately 6 hours of daylight are required to rig double hose.
2. Nylon hose messengers are provided and consist of:
45 fathoms
2-3/4in.
30 fathoms 1-1/2in.
20 fathoms 1 in.
The 1 in spider
messenger
may be off in fair
weather
The word "Same" shown on rigging diagram,
Starboard side, denotes lines at that station are as shown directly
across on Port side.

HINTS
TO HELP US SERVE YOU BETTER
During refueling, advise as to maximum pressure desired at each station
as well as 15, 10, and 1 minute notices prior to the order to stop
pumping would be appreciated.
KAWISHIWI will
clear hoses in the following manner
A
back-suction will be taken only when requested by the customer to drain
oil in the hoses back to oiler tanks.
A blow-through with compressed air (CO2 in AVGAS hose) in
accordance with NWP 38(A), Page 3-7, article 305. To avoid rupturing
fuel hose, manifold valves on receiving ships should remain open until
word is received that the blow-through is completed.
It would also be appreciated if all orders to "start pumping",
"stop pumping", "blow through", and "stop blow-through" are paralleled
by the hand signals described in NWP 38(A), page 2-16, figure 2.6.
KAWISHIWI will send over a phone line at each
station. Phone lines are checked prior to each ship alongside;
there-fore, if communications cannot be established the receiving ship
is requested to change their set of phones and attempt to establish
communications. KAWISHIWI utilizes light telephone wire so phone
lines be tended with a light strain and not belayed on stanchions or
life lines, or allowed to drag in the water. The jacket cover should be
replaced before the phone line is returned.
In order to insure
maximum pumping and delivery rates to
customer ships, it is requested that customer ships assist in the
following manner;
By balancing loads forward and aft so
that equal pumping times should be required.
( 6 )
|
|
By topping off tanks prior to coming alongside so that
empty or near empty tanks are receiving the cargo. This eliminates the
constant opening and closing of tanks and system valves and allows a
steady flow of cargo with a minimum of back pressure.
We should always try to hold the time alongside to a
minimum and we like to use our maximum pump pressures, this can be done
if the proper precautions are taken.
Should a special circumstance on a future customer ship
make it necessary or desirable for us to modify an existing rig, please
request this modification as early as possible an we will try to
comply. also, early notification of highline transfers of personnel,
freight, mail, or movies is appreciated.
KAWISHIWI is part of the Service Force and our mission is to
serve the Fleet. We welcome any suggestions to help us improve this
service.
All NSFO is pumped at a temperature of 90+ degrees to destroyers
and 100+ degrees to other types.
OUR
PLEDGE
Both
KAWISHIWI and you are evaluated on our joint performance in
refueling. We pledge we will do everything we can to keep safety high;
rig and unrigging time low; pumping rate high; and the whole operation
as pleasant as possible.
